Analyzing the degree of conflict among belief functions
نویسنده
چکیده
The study of alternative combination rules in DS theory when evidence is in conflict has emerged again recently as an interesting topic, especially in data/information fusion applications. These studies have mainly focused on investigating which alternative would be appropriate for which conflicting situation, under the assumption that a conflict is identified. The issue of detection (or identification) of conflict among evidence has been ignored. In this paper, we formally define when two basic belief assignments are in conflict. This definition deploys quantitative measures of both the mass of the combined belief assigned to the emptyset before normalization and the distance between betting commitments of beliefs. We argue that only when both measures are high, it is safe to say the evidence is in conflict. This definition can be served as a prerequisite for selecting appropriate combination rules. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A correlation coefficient of belief functions
How to manage conflict is still an open issue in Dempster-Shafer evidence theory. The correlation coefficient can be used to measure the similarity of evidence in Dempster-Shafer evidence theory. However, existing correlation coefficients of belief functions have some shortcomings. In this paper, a new correlation coefficient is proposed with many desirable properties. One of its applications i...

متن کاملMeasuring Conflict Between Possibilistic Uncertain Information Through Belief Function Theory
Dempster Shafer theory of evidence (DS theory) and possibility theory are two main formalisms in modelling and reasoning with uncertain information. These two theories are inter-related as already observed and discussed in many papers (e.g. [DP82,DP88b]). One aspect that is common to the two theories is how to quantitatively measure the degree of conflict (or inconsistency) between pieces of un...
متن کاملAnalyzing the combination of conflicting belief functions
We consider uncertain data which uncertainty is represented by belief functions and that must be combined. The result of the combination of the belief functions can be partially conflictual. Initially Shafer proposed Dempster’s rule of combination where the conflict is reallocated proportionally among the other masses. Then Zadeh presented an example where Dempster’s rule of combination produce...
متن کاملA Defect in Dempster-Shafer Theory
By analyzing the relationships among chance, weight of evidence and degree of belief, it is shown that the assertion \chances are special cases of belief functions" and the assertion \Dempster's rule can be used to combine belief functions based on distinct bodies of evidence" together lead to an inconsistency in Dempster-Shafer theory. To solve this problem, some fundamental postulates of the ...
